What goes on the certificate

A name, the milestone, the date the count started and the date it was reached — and a line to sign it on. The milestones are the ladder the sobriety counter and sobriety milestones pages draw, counted the same way, so the date on the paper is the date on those pages.

The seal at the foot of the sheet is that ladder drawn as a ring: one dot for every milestone, filled in brass up to the one this certificate marks.

Nothing on the certificate says anything about a body. What changes over the same weeks and months is a different question with sourced answers, and the sobriety timeline carries them. Our guide to the milestones worth celebrating has ideas for what to do on the day.

It is a keepsake, not a record anybody has checked. For court, probation or an employer, the programme that monitors you issues its own.

How this is calculated

The milestone is plain date arithmetic from the sober-since date you enter, done on the server in whole calendar days. Day One is the date one day later; each day milestone is that many days on; each anniversary is the same month and day in a later year, and a 29 February date is marked on 28 February in years that have none. It is the same ladder and the same counting the sobriety counter and the sobriety milestones page use, so the dates agree across all three. The certificate records the date it is given and nothing else: it makes no health claim, and nobody checks the date.

What is a sobriety certificate?
A printed sheet that marks one milestone: a first name, the milestone, the date the count started and the date it was reached. Recovery groups have long handed out chips and coins at the same intervals; a certificate is the paper version, the one people frame, put in a card or keep in a drawer.
Is this an official document?
No. It prints the date you give it, and nobody has checked that date. If a court, a probation officer, an employer or a licensing board needs proof of sobriety, ask the programme or testing service that monitors you — they issue their own records. This one is a keepsake.
Which milestones can I make a certificate for?
The same ladder the sobriety counter draws: Day One, which is 24 hours after the last drink, then 1 week, 30, 60, 90, 100 and 180 days, 1 year, 500 days, 1,000 days, and every anniversary after that. You can pick any milestone already reached, or the next one coming.
Can I make one for somebody else?
Yes — a sponsor, a friend or a family member often does. Put in their sober-since date and their first name. The next milestone is on the list too, so the certificate can be printed and signed before the day arrives.
How do I print it?
Pick A4 or US Letter, then open the printable page and print it, or save it as a PDF from the same dialog. It is laid out landscape on one sheet. If your printer trims the edge of the border, choose "Fit to page" or "Scale to fit" in the print settings.
What if I leave the name empty?
The certificate prints a blank line where the name goes, so it can be written in by hand — which is how a lot of people prefer to hand one over.
What is the picture for?
It is the same certificate drawn as a PNG, sized for a message or a post. It is also the image that appears when the link is pasted into a chat, because the link carries the date, the name and the milestone.
Is Day One the same as 24 hours sober?
Yes. The day of the last drink counts as day zero, and Day One is the date 24 hours later. That is how the counter and the milestones calendar count too, so the dates on the certificate match theirs.
What if I drank and started again?
Put in the new date. The certificate is worked out from whatever date is in the box, and nothing here keeps what it said before.
